Nightshelter supporters "take-over" Winchester Parkrun

On March 30th residents, staff and volunteers from the Nightshelter joined Winchester Parkrun for a “take-over” event at their weekly 5k run at River Park Recreation Ground, to raise awareness of the Nightshelter’s work and show our support for Ben Burfoot, who is running the London Marathon in aid of the Nightshelter.

During the event, Nightshelter supporters helped martial the course and cheer on the runners, including Ben, who will be attempting to break the World Record for fastest person to run a marathon in a sleeping bag at the London Marathon on April 28th this year.

Ben has been running the Parkrun in his sleeping bag as part of his training schedule, and has received lots of support from the Parkrun community. An experienced runner, Ben, who comes from Winchester, chose a sleeping bag to highlight the issue of homelessness, and to raise vital funds for the Nightshelter.

Ben commented: "I am no stranger to running marathons and wanted to do something a bit different, that would take me into the unknown and also enable me to shine a spotlight on a vital local cause. Running in a sleeping bag for a few hours will certainly be a challenge for me, but it's nothing compared to the challenges faced by those sleeping rough, which is something I wanted to shine a spotlight on.

Michele Price, Nightshelter Manager, said: “We’re always incredibly grateful when our supporters raise money for us, and this is probably one of the most unusual ways that anyone has ever done so! It will certainly be a challenge for Ben, and we wish him all the very best for his World Record attempt – we’ll be cheering him on at the Marathon, and have no doubt that he can do it.”
