Nightshelter Open day attracts record number of visitors

We were delighted to welcome a record number of people into the Nightshelter for our Open Day, which took place on Saturday 27th January, to link in with Homeless Sunday 2018.

Over 100 people came through our doors for a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the Nightshelter, and to learn more about our vital work with those experiencing homelessness in Hampshire.

Staff, residents and volunteers were on hand to show visitors around, and residents served tea and home-made cakes baked during Nightshelter cookery workshops.

Michele Price, Nightshelter Manager, said: “We frequently find that when people arrive at the Nightshelter, they are surprised by how homely, comfortable and safe it is. What can often come to mind when someone thinks “homeless shelter” is somewhere cold, transient and inhospitable – when in reality the Nightshelter is more like a home to our 17 residents, who can sometimes stay with us for many months.”

She continued: “We open our doors to give those who aren’t familiar with our work the chance to come and learn more about what life here is really like. By hosting an open day for the public, we want to challenge negative perceptions of homelessness and let people see for themselves how we help transform lives for the better. We're delighted that so many people took an interest, and hope that they will walk away with a greater understanding and more positive view of nightshelters in general.”
