Nightshelter helped by South African footballers

A group of South African amateur footballers visited the UK this month and celebrated Mandela Day 2015 in Winchester.

The purpose of the trip, organised by South Africa Diaspora United (SADU), was to celebrate South African communities living abroad and provide an opportunity for the visiting group to get a taste of life in the UK.

As well as taking part in the Nelson Mandela Cup football tournament with local Hampshire teams, the group also volunteered at the Nightshelter to commemorate the compassionate and charitable spirit of Nelson Mandela, the late South African president. Each volunteer gave 67 minutes of their time - one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service - and helped clean the communal areas of the Nightshelter, then chatted to residents and staff about homelessness issues in the UK.

Michele Price, Nightshelter Manager, commented: "This was a wonderful opportunity for both us and our guests to learn more about our respective countries and communities and for the Nightshelter to receive valuable volunteering help. We enjoyed their visit very much and hope that they also enjoyed their time at the Nightshelter and in Winchester."
