Happy birthday to us! We're celebrating 20 years of the Nightshelter on Jewry Street

(Photo - Right, the building pre-1997, when it was used, amongst other things, as a store for the library, and left, the Nightshelter today.)

On September 14th 1997 - 20 years ago - Winchester Churches Nightshelter opened the doors to our new Jewry Street home, welcoming residents into our dedicated shelter for the first time. Since then, we have grown and evolved enormously - from offering basic accommodation and food in Church halls and vacant buildings around Winchester, to being an almost 24/7 service providing a wide-range of vital support options to our residents - from counselling, advocacy and financial advice, to cookery classes, work placements, and even yoga!

Twenty years has made a huge amount of difference to our building - but some things never change; we can still only open our doors at night because of our wonderful volunteers. Nowadays we have a small army of over 200 of them, who on average donate a total of around 9000 hours to the Nightshelter every year.

So to everyone who has helped us over the years - THANK YOU! We would not be where we are - helping between 100-140 people escape homelessness each and every year - without YOU!
